TOPS 1338
TOPS 1338 Creston meets Mondays at 5 p.m. for weigh-in and meeting at 5:30 p.m.
July 14 the meeting was called to order by Leader Anna Thompson. Seven members weighed in. Carol Sheldahl was the week’s best loser, and Alice Brown was second. The best loser for the month of June was Shellie Sullivan with Monica as runner-up.
Anna presented the program on “Faring well at Summer Fairs.”
It was reported a new TOPS manual is now available. Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report. She also won the attendance reward.
Teams were selected for a new contest. The Red Can Challenge for the week was to correspond with another member or a nonmember regarding TOPS.
On July 21, 10 members weighed in. Leader Anna Thompson was the best loser and Lola Baucom was in second place.
Anna conducted the meeting and also gave the treasury report.
Squares were won by Diana Loomis who also gave the program on “Color Your World Soothing — Hue and You.”
The Beans, Beans, Beans, contest is ongoing.

Union County Genealogical Society
Union County Genealogical Society met July 28 at Gibson Memorial Library in Creston. Jane Briley presided. She reported the donation of a scrapbook of local news items and stories from the 1940s-60s and several Creston city directories. Dennis Howard continues to assemble Creston school yearbooks into one, and seeks the Arrow supplement of 1933.
Ten members answered roll call with information about a town that no longer exists.
Saundra Leininger gave the five-minute tidbit. In reading through a family history, she was surprised to find names of relatives from another branch of her family, and names of school friends and other acquaintances.
Dorothy Eyberg gave the program on Danish research. She explained the patronymic system of surnames, and shared resources for researching.
The Aug. 26 meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the library.
Kiwanis
The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 18 members. Chris Frederickson, president, presided. Karen Norton did the prayer, Bill Kunert was greeter, and Jacki Steffen was finemaster.
The program was Dave Abildtrup who discussed the changes and meanings behind the Kiwanis International and local club bylaws.
The club will be hosting the Open Table meal Aug. 26th and membership signed up to help.
The annual pork chop dinner will be Sept. 18 at McKinley Park. Members will have the $8 per meal tickets soon to sell.
