Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met June 18.

Canasta winners were Rose Blakesley, first; Carol Harrison, second; and Barb Bills, third.

Blakesley won the door prize.

Beulah McDonald was hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday.

GRMC Auxiliary

The GRMC Auxiliary meeting was held 10:03 a.m. May 12 in the MAP Conference Room with Annette Rice and five board members present. Tammy Reeves led the meeting. The prior month’s minutes were read and approved.

LouAnn Snodgrass gave the administrative report. She reported the annual golf fundraiser held was a huge success. Carter Insurance Agency was awarded first place.
She also praised the departments for their creativity in providing baskets/prizes.

The success of the various fundraisers allows the Auxiliary to continue to donate to such
causes as scholarships, sleep sack swaddlers, birthing and newborn simulators, and many other projects. The support of the employees and the community is greatly appreciated.

Monday will mark the 50th year for the groundbreaking for the hospital.

HCI (Hospice) developed a local advisory board consisting of 10 people. The Tree of Life will continue. A new suggestion of lighted stars in memory/or honor of was also mentioned.

There have been no new volunteers added for the month of May. There will be an information training class in July.

The linen fundraising sale resulted in $1,360 for the auxiliary.

The Safe Sitter training class was June 19 and 20 in Creston. Eleven students registered for the class.

Rice encouraged members to attend the IHA Conference Oct. 9 at the Community Credit Building in Des Moines. The meeting will run 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

The board voted unanimously to provide ice cream sundaes to GRMC employees and
other departments to show the appreciation the board has for all the help and support they provide throughout the year. This will take place sometime in July or August.

There will not be any Auxiliary or Buyers’ Committee meeting in July.

The next meeting will be 10 a.m. Aug. 11 in the MAP Conference room.

VFW POST 1797

VFW Post 1797 met June 10 at the Elks in Creston. Eleven members and guests were present for dinner.

Commander O'Daniels called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with eight members
present.

The post draped the charter for Veteran Malcom Simmerman.

Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

Service officers report was honor guard 59 hours, community service 28 hours and
hospital 3 hours for a total of 118 hours. We also traveled 720 miles for Veterans. Cheryl
Allen, a concerned citizen, donated an electric motor chair to a veteran in a nursing home.

In old business, the veterans supermarket was a great success; 10 new veterans enrolled for health care and about 90 people attended.

The honor guard participated in several Memorial Day programs May 26. Thanks to all Creston residents who attended.

In new business, induction of new officers will be held July 8.

Wintersteins poured sidewalk at the Freedom Rock June 11.

Flag Day was observed June 19 at the Elks.

SWCC scholarship recipients are: Taylor Lynn Braman of Shannon City and Garrett
Abell of Cromwell.

Commander O’Daniels gave a report on state and district VFW. The district meeting was held in Ottumwa May 17, and Dan Bru of Montazuma was elected commander.

State VFW meeting was held June 6-8 in Burlington.

Meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.

The next meeting will be July 8 at the Elks with 6 p.m. dinner and 7 p.m. meeting. All veterans are encouraged to attend.

Union County Genealogical Society

Union County Genealogical Society met Monday at Gibson Memorial Library in Creston. Jane Briley presided. Members shared favorite genealogical websites in answer to roll call.

Phyllis Allen gave a progress report on photographing local tombstones for “Find a Grave” requests.

The library staff announced Ancestry.com will again be available at the library through the library subscription. This has not been available for several months.

Saundra Leininger shared information about a volunteer researcher with the Iowa Genealogical Society who can assist local chapters with assembling cemetery information. He will be invited to the July meeting.

Briley previewed plans for the genealogy and history open class at county fair.

The five-minute tidbit by Dorothy Eyberg told of Cassius Signor, a black veteran of the Civil War, who is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton.

Calvin Huffman gave the program on the westward movement of pioneers. He shared a map of major migration trails from the east coast; told of several land grants and events that opened the west; and spoke of actual day-to-day living experiences as ancestors moved into Iowa. Extended families and ethnic groups often moved together.

The July 28 meeting will be 6 p.m. at the library.

Crest Area Theatre

The monthly meeting of the Crest Area Theatre Board was held June 2 in the green room at SWCC PAC. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.

Discussion was held regarding the May production of “The Hallelujah Girls.” CAT is grateful for the positive feedback received.

The next CAT Board meeting will be 7 p.m. July 7 in the Green Room.

Crest Area Theatre seeks to provide an opportunity for creative activity and entertainment in the theatre and to serve the community by combining the talents of local artists for dramatic, cultural, and artistic developments. Membership is open to all. Delta Kappa Gamma

Beta Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met June 20 at Henry A. Wallace
Country Life Center. The Executive Board meeting began at 8:45 a.m. with seven members present. The proposed 2014-15 budget was approved with dues remaining at $65. The Executive Board appointed Deb Bauer treasurer for 2014-15. After discussion, the board voted to discontinue the Red Rose Award. The members will continue to report their volunteerism at roll call.

The regular meeting began at 9 a.m. with 10 members present. Correspondence was read from Jennifer Baudler thanking the chapter for awarding her the Grant-in-Aid. Additional correspondence was read, including a thank you from Nancy’s Notions for the little dresses for Africa that were sent, and condolences from Delta Kappa Gamma International on the passing of long-time member Ruth Tucker. A letter was also shared from Upsilon State informing the chapter they had been awarded a $100 mini-grant for their project “Recruitment with a ‘Punch.’” The majority of the grant money will be used to print brochures to be used in explaining the chapter’s goals and the benefits of joining when potential members are contacted.

Upsilon State Convention highlights were shared. Denise Ackerlund received a $600 scholarship. Area 6 will be responsible for the State Convention June 12-14, 2015, which will be held at the West Des Moines Marriot. Julie Derby, Karen Tussey, Lois Frederick and Deb Bauer volunteered to help on the steering committee. Red Rose awards were distributed to Deb Bauer, Linda BreDahl, Denise Ackerlund, Diane Burgmaier and Karen Tussey.

The members were reminded of several upcoming events. The new members of the Executive Board will meet 9 a.m. July 22 at the home of Julie Derby. The chapter will be meeting 10 a.m. Sept. 13 at Orient United Methodist Church to fill bags for the new teachers. Members are asked to donate their usual supplies. State Executive Board meeting will be held Sept. 20 at West Des Moines Marriot. Registration deadline is Sept. 10. Local officers and committee chairs are encouraged to attend. Upsilon State president’s visit will be 10 a.m. Oct. 11 at Henry A. Wallace Country Life Center. Reservations for the brunch are required.

The next regular chapter meeting will be 6:15 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Winterset Sports Page. Laurel Burgmaier will be speaking on the topic “Producing a Television Documentary.” Members are asked to bring four dozen cookies to be used in filling trays for the teachers’ lounges.

Julie Derby shared a Founders’ Day presentation focused on Beta Kappa’s 12 original members. The new officers for 2014-16 were installed, with Julie Derby, president; Connie Nielsen, first vice-president; Linda BreDahl, second vice-president; Karen Tussey, secretary; Diane Burgmaier, corresponding secretary; Lois Frederick, parliamentarian; and Deb Bauer, treasurer. The rest of the meeting was spent planning the programs for the next year.

DWF

The DWF Executive Committee met 2 p.m. June 19 at the First Christian Church to install the officers for the coming year. Margaret Wilkins opened the meeting with prayer.

Minutes from the previous meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer’s report was given. No corrections.

Wilkins gave a report on the anything sale. She will also check on how much revenue they receive from collecting stamps, and if it would be better to just send them a donation. There is $701 in the scholarship fund.

Old business: DWF will be helping with the summer lunch program Aug. 5. At this time, it is not known how many will be served or what DWF will be serving.

It was agreed to table the budget for Open Table until sometime in September. Midge made a motion to keep the amount of $250.00 to the ASP the same. Approved. Rhonda made a motion to keep the amount of $500 to the back pack program the same; second by Pam. Approved.

New business: Pam asked the committee if something should be done for Pastor Di at the coffee fellowship as this will be her last Sunday. She will be leaving to move to Boone. Irene made a motion to do this. Approved. A gift card in the amount of $50 to Barnes & Noble was approved.

Committee Report: None.

Midge installed the officers for the coming year. Each officer was presented a red rose. Refreshments were served in fellowship hall after the installation.

The next meeting will be a ham and bean supper 6 p.m. Sept. 4.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 24 members. President Chris Frederickson presided. Ed Ritter did the prayer, and Chuck Taylor was finemaster.

The monthly board meeting was held.

The Kiwanis Club sign-up for the Fourth of July activities was held, with parade and flag duties being decided.

TOPS 1338

Iowa TOPS 1338 met June 16 with 11 members in attendance. The best loser was Beverly Lyon with Carol Sheldahl as runner-up.

The TOPS pledge led by Anna Thompson opened the business meeting. Minutes were read by Marisue Lewis. Alice Brown advised the club in regard to the treasury.

A slate of names for the new officers was presented. Members voted to accept the listing of names. Officers will be Anna Thompson, leader; Marisue Lewis, co-leader; Diana Loomis, secretary; Alice Brown, treasurer; Neoma Davis and Carol Sheldahl, weight readers; and Diana Loomis, historian. Installation well be in July.

Squares were won by Sandy Oswald and fines went to Anna Thompson.

The program was presented by Mitzie Cellan on the “Advantages and Disadvantages of Caffeine.” She also ha an article on “Advantages and Disadvantages in Weight Loss.”

The Red Can Challenge is to exercise 15 minutes three days in the coming week.

The closing TOPS pledge closed the meeting.

On Monday, TOPS 1338 met at 5 p.m. at the Methodist Church. Eight members weighed in with Lola Baucom as best loser. There was a tie for second place between Monica Belew, Sandy Oswald and Marisue Lewis.

The business meeting was opened with the TOPS pledge. Minutes were read by the secretary. No treasurer’s report was available. Fines were won by Beverly Lyon, and squares went to Marisue Lewis.

Sandy Oswald presented the lesson on “Easy Healthy Eating,” regarding the “Choose My Plate” program compared to the old food pyramid program.

The Red Can Challenge is to use a small plate or bowl for every meal.

The TOPS closing pledge was recited and the meeting adjourned.
